View Full Version : Need Honest Advice re: "Why did you leave your last job?"

I understand that I need to speak positively of my previous workplace, where I only was for 6 months. Honestly, I left because I had no balance between my work and personal life. I worked very long hours, which caused marital problems, lack of exercise, and for health reasons..., not to mention the "hostile working environment/conditions" I endured. The job was just not a "right fit" for me. My previous work history is very positive, and I am one that has always exceeded expectations, but here I wasn't given the respect I deserved and worked like a slave to no avail.

I have an an interview coming up and am really struggling with a brief answer, as opposed "for personal reasons."

I hate to sugar-coat and say that "it wasn't challenging," because it was, and I did a wonderful job regardless of the negative individuals with whom I worked.

How should I answer this question in an interview? Is it okay to say that I left for health reasons and needed a balance between work and personal life; I also flew back to the States (I'm in a foreign country) for a couple of months to take care of personal matters.

I don't want them to think that I'll do the same thing again and leave--because I won't.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
