Barring the usual belief’s that phone are quite easier to handle, phone interviews in fact need much more preparation. Unlike face-to-face interviews, where the interviewer can read your face, here you actually need to make an impression on the interviewer with your voice and confidence in answering his questions.
There are some basic requirements to be kept in mind before and at the time of appearing for an interview on the phone.
Take Care’s Before an Interview:
- Turn call-waiting off so that your call isn’t interrupted
- If the time isn’t convenient, ask if you could talk at some other time and suggest alternatives
- Clear the room of any kids or pets and turn off the stereo and the TV
Take Care’s During an Interview:
- Don’t smoke, chew gum, eat or drink.
- Keep a glass of water handy, in case you need to wet your mouth.
- Speak slowly and enunciate clearly and give short answers.
- Smile as it will project a positive image to the listener.
- Use the person’s title (Mr. or Ms. And their last name). Use first name only if asked to do so.
Take Care’s After the Interview:
- Make notes regarding what you were asked and how you answered
- Don’t forget to say thank you once you finish with the interview. Also try and send a thank you note which reiterates your interest in the job.
